Frog Tape Love

I've been a big fan of Frog Tape ever since a sales person at Sherwin-Williams suggested I give it a try a few years ago.

It helped make painting a large band of chalkboard paint around Max's room an easy job, with sharp lines.

All's Well That Ends Well!

Finally, done...even if I did find myself doing a 360 in the process.

Nearly three years ago I finished the kitchen redesign, but at the first of the year I got an itch to make a change.

So in came SW Foggy Day.

Oops, that looks like...excuse me...crap.

I talked about it in detail in this post, but suddenly my kitchen came down a few design notches, with the cabinetry not looking as good as it once did. I lost the optical illusion of them reaching higher to the ceiling and strangely, they now looked pretty average rather than pretty good. What an irritation, I tell you. I couldn't stand it for more than a day, immediately pulling out a can of the original paint color.

Attempting to make at least something of the effort I'd put into changing the color, I decided to do a wash instead of merely rolling over a layer of the original paint.

Getting there...

...and finally, done. Not only back to the original color (first layers of wash) but I thought, hey, if the light color had created an optical illusion, why not take it a step further and do the final wash using the same paint color we used to paint the cabinetry.

The result is very difficult to accurately capture in photos - the effect is subtle and doesn't show up easily in the images. But here's a photo I highlighted to give you an idea of what is going on in person.

I'm happy. I'm not touching this paint again for years. I promise myself and I promise you. Moving on...I got a table to work on.

Have You Ever Wanted to Quit?

Have you ever wanted to quit something that was important to you? Of course you have, we all have. I guess it's what we do next that counts.

I won't bore you with all the complicated details but last week, for the first time, the future of House of Fifty Magazine felt like it was in question. This venture has proceeded without any major glitches, amazingly, so I guess we were long overdue for a challenge!

What happened? During a week when you'd think I'd be taking a break after the release of our latest issue, instead every working hour was focused on fixing a tech issue with the HOF app. Just a few hours after we announced the "early release" of the iTunes app, a few emails began trickling in from users saying that they could see text but no images. WHAT?!?! It appeared to be occurring for a minority of users, but to be safe we delayed our planned campaigns to announce the issue was live until we could figure out what was going on. What a rocky start to a launch! And to make things even more stressful, it took days to identify the source of the problem.

{And FYI, if you experienced this issue and didn't notify us, update your iPad user system to iOS 5.0, delete and reinstall the app, and voila, the problem will be gone. If you need further instructions, just send me an email and the step by step instructions will be yours! For those of you who did write, thank you. You were amazingly patient and kind while waiting for further information from us.}

Anyway, during the time the developers, designer and my husband and I were busy troubleshooting, I had to face the possibility of having to remove the app from sale, if we didn't figure out what was going on. This would have been a huge setback, as the sale of the app is one of the sources of revenue to pay contributors and others that work on the publication. Doing so would have seriously hampered the ability of House of Fifty Mag to move forward in a strong fashion.

Mid week, one night at dinner, I brought up the question: What if I were no longer able to publish this magazine, what would be next? I wanted to wrap my head around that idea and be okay with it, if worse case scenarios were coming my way. I was surprised by what followed. Isabella got pretty emotional, saying "You can't quit!" It was not the response I had expected. I didn't know it meant so much to her that I work on this venture and that she is proud of me and the magazine. I realized in that moment that quitting was not an option. Not only for me, but for her...and perhaps for some of you?

Luckily, the tech problem was identified soon afterwards, I didn't have to pull the app and we could resume getting the word out about the new issue. But what a week, with the events seriously hampering our focus and ability to market our latest issue! The feedback has been wonderful from those who have found it, but the launch has had a hard time finding it's legs. So, dear readers, if you have enjoyed reading House of Fifty, I would be thrilled if you would consider sharing it with your network - if you have a blog, facebook page, or with friends you know would enjoy it as well.

Tomorrow, back to the regular routine here at Isabella & Max Rooms, but thank you for letting me share a bit about what goes on behind the scenes and particularly what goes on behind the scenes when things don't go as you hope they will!

Getting Paint Right...It Isn't Always Easy!

If you've been reading along, you know my attempt at painting the walls in my kitchen a deep gray/blue was a disaster. {see here} So I immediately decided to go back to the original color, I didn't want to look at it for more than a day!

However, irritated at the idea of completely wasting the effort it took to paint the space, I decided to return to a lighter color using a series of washes, instead of just rolling on a new layer of the original color. Perhaps I could return the walls to their lighter state while retaining a hint of gray peeking through.

I'm not going to say it has been a quick process...

First a layer of the original color, SW Universal Khaki, was washed over the SW Foggy Day. Hum. Too much gray showing through the color. So I went a step lighter, adding more layers using SW Softer Tan, the cabinetry color.

And the family keeps asking, "you're painting, again?!"

Yes. Yes I am.

But look, it's nearly there! I'll keep you posted.

A Kitchen Trend I'm Loving!

A trend in design that I've immediately become a fan of is tile to the ceiling in kitchens!

Moroccan tile in a butler's pantry...

...and a herringbone pattern in the adjoining kitchen.

Interior Designer Tineke Triggs predicts this is a trend we'll be seeing a lot more of in the near future. See "Celebrating the Heart of the Home" in the new issue of House of Fifty to learn more about the above spaces.

And have you seen this one? It has been making its way around Pinterest, and is by Palmer Weiss.

Still Loving This DIY Redo!

Last year, right about now, I finished up the redo of this console.

With its new look, it is still a favorite piece in the house!

What did it take to complete this transformation? First the console was sanded, removing a thick layer of polyurethane.

To ensure a successful painting job, (one that completely covered the old finish and resulted in a durable finish) the console was then covered with a layer of Sherwin Williams Adhesion Primer. After drying for 24 hours the surface was lightly and quickly sanded with fine grit sand paper. And when I say quickly I mean it, it only took a few minutes to run over the entire console. If you doubt me ask my mom, I was on the phone with her the entire time. "What do I hear in the background, are you sanding?!" Multitasking at its finest in my opinion!

Then, prior to applying paint, the black hardware was transformed with the product of a thousand uses: Rub n' Buff. I suspected the black finish would look too stark against the new paint and this approach fixed the problem for under five dollars.

Afterwards the console was ready for its paint job. I had a can of Softer Tan mixed up in Sherwin Williams ProClassic paint formula, a water based paint that dries to a hard finish similar to an oil based enamel. This paint is a perfect choice for painting furniture and to make certain the paint went on with a smooth finish I added KIM Latex X-Tender, a conditioner which increases working time. Still, a key to painting furniture and cabinetry with success is to not over-brush.

Finally, the right brushes make all the difference. My favorite are made by Purdy, with my go-to brush being the Purdy Clearcut Glider three inch brush with an angled edge. It retails for around $13 and is worth every penny. These brushes help paint go on evenly, leaving a minimal amount of visible brush strokes and best, filaments don't begin to fall out while painting. (The 2 or 2 1/2 inch version is great for edging when painting a room.) If cleaned properly after use these brushes can last a very long time, which in the end makes them the affordable choice.

The inside of the console was already stained a beautiful chocolate brown, so I left it, simply painting up to the line where the stain begins.

I looked at this piece for two years while debating whether or not to paint it. The result is so beautiful I am now wondering what took me so long to jump in and just get it done!

Upscale, Repurpose & Reimage: My 2012 Decorating Plan

I have very little interest in spending a lot of money on my house this year, it's just where my head is at these days. But that doesn't mean I don't want to adjust a few things, adding a "fresh up" here and there. So my idea is to look at what I already have in place and see what simple adjustments can be made to add a new twist, while continuing to evolve our home into the vision I have for it.

First (and only?) Snow Of The Year

Not much got accomplished around our house this weekend, but we did enjoy a rare (and very light) snowfall early Sunday morning, getting out to make the most of it!

Max's biggest goal for the year, beginning last fall, was to wear shorts for 365 days in a row. For months he's been hoping it would snow and he'd get the badge of honor of wearing shorts even on that day. Well, his dream came true!

Have you gotten a snowfall that makes this look nearly like a spring day?!

A Short Drive From Portland

A short drive from Portland...

...up a winding trail, lies a scene that looks like it could come out the movie Land of the Lost. (Not that I've ever seen it...I'm just imagining!)

(There? Yes, we're going over there.)

And there's a reward, another mile up the trail it gets even better. Horsetail Falls.

The great part? You can walk behind it.

The roar, the spray, it's wonderful!

Best shot of the day. Yes, upstaged by Isabella.

If you are ever driving along the Columbia Gorge, make sure to stop, do a bit of climbing and see this spot. You won't be disappointed.

But if hiking is not your thing, this stunning scene of Multnomah Falls can be seen from the car.

Now This Is A Kitchen That Can Handle Gray Walls!

After reading about my less than successful attempt at adding dark color to my kitchen walls, one reader sent me a link to Christopher Peacock's own kitchen, having recently been painted just such a color. I knew it was going to be great, I mean after all, his cabinetry company is amazing.

As I suspected, after realizing my kitchen couldn't handle the color, it could if the cabinets ran to the ceiling...

...with a well thought out and beautifully designed layout, taking into consideration balance and symmetry. And some crown molding thrown in.

As soon as my kitchen has all those things (uh-huh) I'll be pulling out the dark paint again stat.

Kitchen Paint Progress...It Hit A Glitch

I was happily painting along (I do love to paint!), when something happened. An optical illusion disappeared.

What on earth am I talking about?!

Once the dark paint covered the walls the room visually changed, and not just from a color standpoint. All of a sudden, cabinetry that looked beautiful and higher end, suddenly looked of the "out of the box" variety. Previously, with the cabinetry, blacksplash and walls all having a similar tone, they blended in and created an optical illusion that the cabinetry extended further up towards the ceiling, while appearing more expansive along the walls.

Once the dark color was up, however, the cabinets suddenly looked "squat" with the different sections of the upper cabinets appearing as "choppy" boxes on the wall. SO WEIRD! See the difference below:

A lesson in leaving well enough alone?

I love the gray/blue color, but it simply isn't working in terms of allowing the overall design and look of the kitchen to rise to its highest potential.

I'm feeling grumpy about the whole thing, and the wasted time...though perhaps not completely wasted because I certainly learned something. But grumpy because I need to repaint. Yes, I've decided to return to the lighter, original color. Seriously.

But before just flat out painting a layer of Sherwin Williams Universal Khaki over the gray, I'm going to start with a wash, just to see if there is any hope of taking advantage of the effort extended in painting the room gray. That may prove to be a mess, we'll see. I'll keep you posted.

So, learn from me! Prior to tackling any painting projects yourself, first consider any optical illusions that may be altered with your color choices.

An Organization Project That Has Had Staying Power!

Now, as you scroll down, don't you go calling me a hoarder.

Here's a repost of an organizing project I did a year ago...that amazingly has had staying power. Just take a look at the "after" photos, one from January 2011 and the second taken yesterday, at the end of this post.

This is a hall closet where all the games are stored, along with sewing, painting and wrapping supplies, small tools, scissors, tape, pens, cards and just about every other little item you find yourself needing on a daily basis. With a minimum of harassment from me, the rest of the family has cooperated and learned to RETURN an item to where it belongs after using: The key to any organizing project having lasting results I've discovered.

The disaster from a year ago...

Not too bad. I approached this project by getting two large boxes to fill with any items worth donating, garbage bags for anything that should have been tossed a while ago, wicker baskets for storage and a lot of Ziploc bags.

This pile of random items is what was in front of the bins, the actual content hidden away inside the bins were emptied and sorted through later! Where did that lamp shade come from? This closet is deep and I was amazed at the amount of stuff our family had managed to tuck away, back in its recesses, over the last couple of years.

The game shelf is what surprised me! How is it possible we have that many games?

They were sorted through, with the ones used frequently put back on the shelf and the others donated to Goodwill.

What a mess! Bags of seasonal decor, acrylic paint, ribbon, wrapping paper and lots and lots of odds and ends.

Sort, toss, clean, pack up and organize into piles of similar items.

Then I tackled the bins.

Organize, organize, organize.

Finally, the post-its used for identifying the bin contents while sorting were replaced with pretty labels, and this project was done.

Taking Advantage Of Sunny Skies

Hands down, in my opinion this is the best NW winter I've ever experienced. The skies have been sunny, so who cares if it is chilly! We've been taking advantage, getting out and exploring the sites Portland has to offer.

If you live in the area, or visit, you must find yourself in Washington Park. It's a large park with winding trails, amazingly situated just up the hill from the city center, and even better, surrounded by the most beautiful homes.

A little nature, a little "house hunting": Seriously, what could be better.

Time To Paint!

The other day I was standing in my master bathroom and was hit with a flash of inspiration.

This room and the master bedroom are my favorite rooms in the house, and the wall color is a big reason.

So, off I went to pick up a couple versions of the color, slightly lighter...for the kitchen. For some reason my home looks best dressed in dark paint, and I'm feeling like a little change without a big price tag.

Loving the "Foggy Day," it looks great with the granite, bringing out its gray tones.

I think I'll be heading out to get a gallon!

Hello 2012!

It's a new year! On the decorating front I don't have any huge plans. But when I grow up this is what my house will look like: classic architecture with a mix of old and new furniture, and a lot of happy color thrown in.

On the fashion front, it was a good a start to the year. In a bit of fashion anxiety while dressing for a party I opened a drawer to see a long forgotten lace skirt, looking amazingly current{this has to be at least 20 years old!} Hey, that would work, but does it fit? I never hang on to clothes...glad I made an exception.

And on the House of Fifty front, we are busy wrapping up the fourth issue, to be released at the end of the month. It is shaping up to be what I hope will be the best issue yet! This has been a venture that continues to grow and one that I thoroughly enjoy working on. After years of working in solitary fashion on design projects, writing assignments and this blog I can't begin to tell you how rewarding it is to work as a team! Thank you everyone who has worked with me on House of Fifty to date, you're the best.

How To Make Gold Leafed Candlesticks

If you are like me, you're taking this week kind of slow and enjoying some down time. But, if down time for you just happens to include a little DIY'ing, here's a fun way to update worn or old candlesticks with a little sheen!

Materials Needed:

collection of candlesticks in varying heights
fine-grit sandpaper
tack cloth
gold-leaf sheets

liquid adhesive
gold-leaf sealer
gold-leaf antiquing
2 foam brushes

Gather Supplies

Find a collection of old or worn candlestick holders and collect needed supplies.

Sand Surfaces

Lightly sand candlestick holder surfaces to remove any existing finish.

Wipe Clean

Wipe away dust with tack cloth.

Apply Adhesive

Brush all surfaces with gold-leaf liquid adhesive. Let set approximately 30 minutes until tacky.

Apply Gold Leaf

Lay sheets of gold leaf over candlestick surfaces and press into place with foam brush. Repeat until entire surface is covered.

Wipe Away Excess Leafing

Brush away loose particles with foam brush.

Apply Sealer

Brush on layer of gold-leaf sealer. Let dry 30 minutes.

Apply Antiquing Finish

Brush on layer of gold-leaf antiquing finish.

Rub In and Wipe Away

Rub antiquing finish into cracks and ridges. Wipe away any excess with rag.

It Was Probably The Last Christmas For Believing in Santa...

I do think it was the last year our family will be participating in this ritual. I was thinking about this as the kids set out the cookies, milk and their notes to Santa. Isabella obviously was just going along with the game and Max had brought up a few questions which revealed doubt was brewing, as the day approached. But hey, it's a system that has worked pretty well so far, so really...why mess with a good thing?!

Then after the kids went to bed my husband and I continued the traditions of the last 10 years, waiting until we were pretty sure they were asleep to quickly fill the stockings and bring out the packages from Santa. Wrapped in the paper bought and hidden specifically for these boxes, with tags carefully filled out, writing with my left hand. Oh, the extent one goes to when young children are in the house. But, they aren't so young any longer...

I was a bit sad to think next year we'll probably be celebrating with new rituals and traditions, ones that will fit their new wisdom. But at the same time, I think I'll be happy to welcome what comes next.

How to Make A Votive Candle Runway For Santa!

Whether you live in a home with young children who are excitedly awaiting the arrival of Santa, or merely want to create a festive welcome for guests arriving during a party, here is a simple way to light the way!

Side note: Looking at these pictures I just have to smile! This is a tutorial I was asked to write last winter for HGTV.com, and I wasn't certain I'd actually be able to pull it off. I mean, we don't have snow every year in the NW. However, I gathered my supplies, took the "steps" photos and then set everything by the front door to wait for snow to capture the "beauty shoot." Perhaps I'd get lucky before the article deadline and snow would magically appear at my front door. Well what do you know, one night the weather report claimed snow might just arrive early the next morning. So I set my alarm for a crazy hour and amazingly snow was falling! I quickly moved out the glass cylinders, lit the candles and started capturing photos. This brief snowfall ended up being the only snow we saw all winter, talk about luck.

A few minutes later I heard screams of delight. The kids had awaken and wanted to get out and play in the snow asap...at a few minutes past six! I blew out the candles, bundled them up and off we went to make snowmen! What fun, I hope we are as lucky this year.

Materials Needed:

several glass cylinders or mason jars
rock salt
votives

length of garland
matches

Gather Supplies

Select glass cylinders or jars and gather votives and rock salt.

Fill Containers

Pour rock salt into each container, filling approximately 1/5 full.

Place Votives

Arrange votive in each container, pushing votive down into salt to secure in place.

Light Candles

Light candles, arrange along steps and enhance with a length of garland.

Wait for Santa to Arrive

Enjoy your handiwork, set out some milk and cookies and get ready for the man in the red suit to make an appearance.

Here's a tutorial for making a pinecone encrusted wreath - just in case you're done with the shopping, the wrapping, card sending and the planning for guests in these last days before Christmas and are looking for something to do! I had a lot of fun making this wreath for an HGTV tutorial. For some crazy reason any project using my glue gun is one I find...enjoyable!

How to Make a Holiday Pinecone Wreath

Create a gorgeous organic wreath with glitter-dusted pinecones. Hung with a colorful ribbon, this easy-to-create craft will brighten up your front door, a foyer mirror or any other spot that needs a sophisticated holiday touch.

Materials Needed:

foam wreath form
small gold encrusted pinecones
foam brush
gold paint

glue gun and glue sticks
2" wide ribbon (1 yard)
scissors
tacks

Gather Supplies

Select and gather a foam wreath form, pinecones and ribbon. Tip: Use small tree ornaments as an alternative to pinecones.

Paint Styrofoam Wreath

Brush a layer of paint over the wreath in the same color as the pinecones to ensure wreath form isn't visible.

Apply Glue and Attach Pinecones

Place a small bead of glue on the underside of each pinecone then place on wreath; press and hold in place for a few seconds until secure. Tip: Place pinecones as close together as possible and vary the sizes to add textural interest.

Cover Wreath

Continue attaching pinecones until the entire front surface of the wreath is covered.

Apply on Back Edges

Turn the wreath over and glue pinecones along the back edges to ensure the foam surface won't be visible when the wreath is hanging.

Hang With Ribbon

Wrap the length of the ribbon around the top side of the wreath. Hang in place by pushing tacks through the ribbon along the top edge of a door or mirror.

A Little "Secret Santa" Fun!

I'm participating in a bit of Secret Santa fun, organized by the creative Mrs. Limestone.

"In a fit of holiday cheer, I sent out an email asking a short list of some of my favorite bloggers to see if they would be interested in a secret santa this year. I wasn't sure if those things are even done anymore, but thankfully almost everyone chimed in that they wanted to play along. Hooray!"

Baking and decorating Christmas cookies is a fun holiday tradition I've always enjoyed! Using a great recipe passed down from my grandmother, the tradition continues...

Cream: 2 1/2 cubes butter and 2 cups sugar

Add: 2 eggs

Sift: 5 cups flour

4 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

Add flour to sugar mixture, adding 1/2 cup milk as you stir.

Chill for approximately one hour

Roll & Cut

Bake @ 375 degrees, 8-10 minutes

Let cool and have fun DECORATING!!

{this recipe makes a lot of cookies...cut in half for a reasonable number}

DIY Gold Leaf Tray

Again, last spring I was busy working on a few HGTV DIY Tutorials for this Holiday Season. Nothing like working outside the given season to confuse a person, just a little. Kind of like right now, we are in the midst of the biggest holiday of the year and I'm currently focused on the Spring issue of House of Fifty!

Regardless, here is an easy way to update a tray, great for the holidays or any time of year!

Materials Needed:

lacquered black serving tray
painters tape
gold leaf sheets
liquid adhesive

gold leaf sealer
gold leaf antiquing
2 foam brushes

Gather Supplies

Source black lacquered serving tray, collect needed supplies. Tip: Can't find a lacquered tray? Create the look of by paiting a wooden tray with glossy black spray paint.

Apply Painters Tape

Line inside lower edges of tray with painters tape, running the tape edge flush to tray surface. Press firmly in place.

Apply Adhesive

Brush tray surface with gold leaf liquid adhesive. Let the adhesive set for approximately 30 minutes, or until tacky.

Apply Gold Leaf

Lay sheets of gold leaf over tray surface, overlapping slightly as necessary. Press into place with a foam brush. Tip: Don't worry about applying gold leaf perfectly. Folds and gaps in the leafing create surface interest.

Once the entire surface is covered with gold leaf, brush away loose particles with a foam brush.

Apply Sealer

Brush on a layer of gold leaf sealer. Let dry 30 minutes.

Apply Antiquing Finish

Brush on layer of gold leaf antiquing finish.

Finish the Tray

Rub antiquing finish into cracks and ridges. Wipe away any excess with rag. Then, remove the tape. The tray is ready to be stocked with drinks, spirits or appetizers!

Do you ever encounter people that are simply at a loss as to what you do, if you write a blog or have work that is associated with an online presence? If a person's work and livelihood aren't a part of this online world, what we do (or what they think we are doing), can appear strange...and even rather pointless.

I certainly have had my fair share of these experiences. My solution? I stopped talking about my work with people in my "real life." If they want to know, they can ask. Otherwise, it makes more sense to focus on what is right in front of us, in this "real world." Believe me, it works and has taken a lot of pressure off of my daily life!

However, the next time someone asks me what I'm doing and more to the point, why I do it, (ie: what is the point), I'd love to hand them a copy of this message!

A couple weeks ago I posted this print and my friend Courtney promptly fired off an email inquiring if everything was alright. Or was I just being sappy. Ha, yes, I do tend to have a penchant for being sappy, though I do my best to control it.

Everything was fine, I was just celebrating! If you are a consultation in the technology field, or are married to, dating or know of someone in this line of work, you know that travel is a constant. That is, or was, my husband. Over all the years I've know him I've nearly followed him around the world, and once we had children, I dragged them along when I could. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a passport photo of an infant, sitting up? To fly to Singapore with a 10 week old? Actually she was a doll and didn't cry once, simply amazing.

Well finally, after many many many years, and countless miles...

(And the perks of constant travel, which will be the only thing sorely missed: Does anyone remember this post of the shack we were set up in at one resort?!)

..he is home.

Working in the town we live in. A cause for celebration to be certain.

So yes, home is where the husband is. And now that doesn't mean jumping on a plane to follow.

How to Make Architectural Letters

Sometime last spring I was busy working on a few holiday DIY tutorials for HGTV.com. How fun to finally be able to share these projects with you! Even earlier, when working on the Master Bedroom Redesign, I had such a great time making the "M" and "I" Architectural Letters for the art wall that I thought this could become a fun holiday project as well, using letters to spell a word fitting of the season.

Here are the steps to create your own...it couldn't be more easy!
{paper mache letters available at JoAnn Fabrics}

Materials Needed:

paper mache letters
tinted primer
silver metallic paint

rust-colored acrylic paint
foam and bristle brushes
rag

Gather Supplies

Select letters, gather paint, brushes and rag.

Apply Primer

Brush a layer of primer over letter surfaces, leaving noticeable brush strokes in varying directions. Let dry to the touch.

Apply Metallic Paint

Brush a layer of metallic paint over letter surfaces, leaving noticeable brush strokes in varying directions.

Wipe Letters

Wipe away excess metallic paint with rag.

Add Rust Accents

Mix or use rust-colored paint to brush highlights over letter edges and any rough or raised areas.

Wipe Letters

Wipe away excess rust-colored paint.

Apply Second Coat of Metallic Paint

Brush on second layer of metallic paint to diffuse rust accents.

Rub In and Wipe Away

Using rag, rub in metallic paint and wipe away any excess.

Display the Letters

Spell out the season's greetings on a table, mantel or location of your choice to spread a little holiday joy.

One year ago, I was sitting in this house wondering what was next.

While spending a few days with my family at a friend's beach house, I was trying to figure a way out of a slump brought on by a little run-in with "ageism".

I knew I had to find something to get excited about, for myself and my career, if I didn't want to buy into the message that my best days were behind me.

That is when the idea that led to the launch of House of Fifty began...

One year later, I'm thrilled. It was been such a rewarding venture to work on and I am so thankful to all the people who have become part of this project, and to the reception it has received from you. I think it is very fitting the "anniversary" of the idea for House of Fifty falls on the week of Thanksgiving!

Decorating Smarts: Using What You Have

Do you think you need to wait until you have a decent budget to start in on a room? If you look around your house, in the garage and perhaps in the basement, making use of what is already on hand you might just be surprised with the progress that can be made by using what you have. Case in point: Lakeitha's "new" living room!

As Lakeitha wrote: "Last night while I was painting the last cabinet in my kitchen, I got the urge to pull together my living room on the fly using what I have."

"For the past year, my living room had been bare. Ok, who am I kidding, it has been my catch all room when I’m working on projects! So last night when I saw one of the boys riding the back of my sofa like a horse, I decided right then that I had to make better use out of my living room and I started by moving the sofa in there. After pulling pieces from different rooms and from my garage, I ended up with this:"

"I still have A LOT to do to say that this room is “finished”. I need to add some pictures and art to the walls. I need more pillows and I know exactly which ones I want! With the holidays knocking at the door, I had to do something fast. Next is the dining room and then I’m going to finish the kitchen which is really really close to being done. Using what you have is a great way to decorate when you’re in a hurry and on a limited budget (and believe me, my budget is teeny weeny!)…. So, what do you think?"
